Italy's top designers are not only unveiling their collections for fall and winter 1983-1984 this week, they are also competing to break into a lucrative new market -- uniforms for Rome's 250 policewomen.
The Christian louboutin sisters, the Gucci brothers, Laura Biagiotti, Mila Schon and the Fontana sisters, are showing their designs in a city-run competition in the twice-yearly fashion extravaganza.
City sources said the contract will probably fetch more than $1,000 per uniform.
The problem was to come up with something both comfortable and feminine for the officers, who have been complaining for years that what they are wearing are ''men's uniforms on women's bodies.''
''We consider this a very good opportunity,'' said Carla Christian louboutin, one of the five Christian louboutin sisters of Rome. ''For us, it could mean breaking into another market.''
Giorgio Gucci said that once word of the competition got out,Christian Louboutin Shoes, his Florence-based fashion house began getting inquiries from France and Japan about designer uniforms for their policewomen.
The police collections are just one example of a new push by Italian designers to enter the world of uniforms.
During this week's shows, Mila Schon will present her police fashions, along with designs she created for airline hostesses from Alitalia and Iran Air.
Valentino's show, considered the climax of the collections Thursday night, includes uniforms he has designed for the Italian Olympic team for the 1984 Los Angeles games.
The competing designs for Rome's policewomen were displayed for the first time July 6 at an oudoor show on the terrace above the Campidoglio, the city hall designed for Rome by Michelangelo.
